My Thankful "Leftovers" List

I totally slacked on blogging days 3-5 of thankfulness.  I'm going to smoosh it all together here...
  • Day #3:  I am thankful for showers and good books.  I have horrible insomnia.  I used to watch tv in the wee hours of the morning when I couldn't sleep.  However, our new roomie, Stella, has a hard time staying asleep with the tv on.  So when the insomnia hits, I go to the bathroom, hop in the shower and read.  I've read soooooo many book over the past few months.  I actually just finished a new book the other night ("Sing you Home" by Jodi Picoult)- I am not sure what book I want to get into next, so during the transition period, I'm re-reading "Twilight."  For real. :)  And I'm actually loving it as much as I did the first time around!
  • Day #4:  I'm thankful to live in such a beautiful city.  It's completely bizarre (but very cool) to live in a city where people actually come to vacation.  I don't know the percentage, (its a big one) but most of the revenue in this town comes from tourists.  I have these surreal moments every now and then, where I feel like I have to pinch myself and say, "I'm not on vacation!"
  • Day #5:  I'm thankful for a husband who lets me sleep in on Saturday mornings!  Ever since having kids, Ryan's always been really good about letting me sleep in on Saturdays.  He loves making breakfast and watching cartoons with the kids... and that just works out perfectly for me!  :)  This morning, he made the kids big fluffy waffles and they wrestled around the house while watching "The Aristocats."  Stella and I emerged from our room around 9- and I'm telling you- those extra couple hours of sleep made me feel like a new person!

Day 2: Health Insurance

Right off the bat, let me say that I think our health insurance system is horrible and awful in more ways than I can count.

But with all the medical issues we've had in the past few months, I am sure thankful we have insurance.

Ryan works with an insurance company (as an accountant) so we happen to have really rockin' insurance at the moment.  When he signed on in June, I was 30-some weeks pregnant, and we knew that we would need a good plan.  I think we're going for less coverage come January, because the price of insurance is just absurd.  But whatever... this is a thankful post, so I won't get into that ;)

So we knew we had a baby coming in August... but we didn't know Henry would break his arm or that I'd be back in the hospital with kidney stones.

Both of those incidents would have buried us.

My kidney stones included a days worth of IV fluids, meds and lab tests in the ER.

Henry's broken arm included x-rays up the wazoo, his soft cast, his hard cast, the removal of his cast, and more x-rays.

We got the bills for both of these, and thanked the Lord we had insurance!

Soooo... yes, insurance is expensive, complicated and frustrating.  But I am thankful we are able to have it.

30 Days of Thankfulness

Okay peeps... my plan is to blog each and every day this month of ((thanksgiving))  about what I am thankful for in my life.  I have a ginorrrrrmous list... so I'm sure each day there will be a few items included in the post.  Without further ado...

Day 1:

Today (and everyday) I am thankful that we have food on our table.

Newsflash:  This economy sucks.  We are barely making it.  And I don't mean to bring you a sob story this Tuesday morning.  But money is tight.  Like, suuuuuper, duper tight.  If I told you our grocery budget you'd laugh (well maybe not laugh, because that would be kind of cruel and none of my readers are cruel :).

Basically, we have the same menu each week, and going over a couple of dollars on the budget means the difference between paying a utility bill or not.

Here's our menu:
-oatmeal for breakfast
-pb &J for lunch (usually with goldfish and fruit snacks)
-and for dinner we alternate with tacos, sausage and rice, spaghetti and hot dog/hamburger grill out night.

Okay- side thought- what a great idea this is to write out what we are thankful for, because just writing that makes me feel silly for feeling angry with our situation!

This town is full of homeless people.  I've blogged before about how heartbreaking it is to see them begging for food or work.

About 20 times a day (maybe more) I silently curse our money situation.  And yeah, I'm embarassed to admit that...  but it's hard to not get what you want or what you think you need all the time!  Be honest, it is, right??

When I'm at the grocery store with my list, calculator and coupons, I'm constantly grumbling to myself about how I wish we could have this or that, but instead I steer toward the canned goods to make another  dinner of red beans and rice.  Yes, it would be awesome if we could afford the $6.00 gallon of organic milk... or the premium ground chuck... or those lovely organic tomatoes that call to me every time I walk past them.  But the reality is, its not in our budget.  At all.

BUT... our bellies are full.  And for that, I'm thankful.

thankful thursday

I am thankful to have a little girl (and guy... and another little girl on the way:) so I can laugh and smile as I see life through the eyes of my kids...

It's an understatement to say these kids are the light of my life.  :)

Happy Thursday!

Thanksgiving 2010.

I've taken notice that many facebook friends have been doing "Thanksgiving Day Countdowns." Each day of November, they note something they're thankful for. I wanted to join in, but it was a few days into the month and I felt too far behind. SO I decided to make one big "NOVEMBER THANKSGIVING....WHAT I'M THANKFUL FOR" post. Very cliche, but just go with it...

In no particular order, I am not only THANKFUL but, BLESSED as well, for....

11/1- A roof over my head. As broke as we feel sometimes, we have shelter- a place to call "home"- something many in this world do not have. And as much as I complain about the house... I am thankful for it.

11/2- My husband. A given, right? This man is incredible. He is a billion things and I could rattle them off, but I'll keep it short and sweet- he's humble, brilliant, selfless, loving, and mine. :)

11/3- Maeve. She's dramatic, over the top, and can function with little to no sleep. But she has the kindest soul. She's gentle and only knows goodness. For that, I'm thankful.

11/4- Henry. My manly mister on my hipster. (that's his new nickname). My bub is very clingy, which gives my arms and back a work out, but he's worth every ache! He's chubby, cuddly and my baby. I'm thankful for happy "surprises" (aka HENRY!).

11/5- Health. It's something that I genuinely thank God for each and every day. I'm not trying to be prideful, in saying that I pray and don't take this for granted- but its something that I try to keep in perspective 24/7. Whenever I'm having a rough day, I can look at my babies and say, "we're together, we're healthy, things could be worse." And that, my friends is the truth.

11/6- Good friends. They are few and far between, but I have them. They're the ones who send me little messages just saying "I miss you." Or the friend that I don't often see, but always has an ear and a shoulder for me. The friend that may not be within driving distance, but will always have my phone number and the right to vent, celebrate, and cry with. The friend who calls me nearly every morning, just to chat. The friend that drops goodies off on my door step, just to say, "hi." I am so blessed. And SO thankful for you, my dear friends. :)

11/7- The Incredibles, (aka my family). I could go on forever here, but my fingers can't form out the words that are flooding my head at the moment. So instead, I'll just say, they're really great. Really, really great. And I am thankful that I was born into such an amazing family.

11/8- my blackberry (and THIS, is where the list gets to be a smudge shallow). Or as my husband refers to it, my "crackberry." Yeah, its addictive. But its purple, it connects me to everyone, all the time, and it always gets good service. Thank you Verizon/Blackberry people :)

11/9- Jeggings. AMEN. The end.

11/10- Obstetricians, gynecologists, midwives, etc. I was sitting in the office the other day, (let me make certain, the reason for my office visit was NOT for obstetrics!) thinking how unpleasant of a job that could be. I won't get into detail here, but I think we should all be thankful someone is willing to deal with that...area. Ya know?

11/11- Medications. I've said it before, I'll say it again, I am thankful for modern medicine. From tylenol to my trusty altenelol, I give thanks that these medicines provide comfort and relief for me!

11/12- the ocean. "You don't want, you don't wait, you don't love, but you don't hate. You just roll, right over me, and you pull me in." -Jack Johnson

11/13- Crocs. My kids walk really well in them and the jibbitz are addicting.

11/14- food in my belly.

11/15- citrus trees. My parents have their "graperine" tree in the back yard. I take pictures of the sun coming up every morning, through the "graperines." I am thankful for the fruit itself; the yummy taste and smells, and also the happy feeling I get when I see the bobbing orange blobs.

11/16- pacifiers/bottles. They calm my kids down. Thank you.

11/17- the most magical place on earth. DISNEY Y'ALL! :) Oh Walt, I THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU for having such a brilliant imagination and the capacity to dream like you did. THANK YOU.

11/18- fans. They help me sleep. I like the whir and the breeze they create.

11/19- good books that help me escape for a little bit.

11/20- pedicure and massage people :) I love you all.

11/21- I'm going to say this, and perhaps get some backlash for it, but FACEBOOK. Yup, I'm thankful for facebook. It can be very evil, but most of the time, it connects me with family and friends. I get to network with other moms from across the country. I get to photostalk. I love you facebook.

11/22- my cameras. What can I say? From the days of the disposable cameras to my baby (the 40d), photography has been this itch that always needs to be scratched. It will always keep me on my toes. It will always keep me wanting more, reaching for better, connecting me with people and places. It's the heartbeat of my creative, artsy side, and I'm thankful that there are people out there who think I've got potential. I'm thankful that I have eyes to see, and a fast shutter speed to capture anything I want.

11/23- time. How deep is that? But really, how could I (you, anyone?) not be thankful for time. The time we've had, the time we will have. I am thankful for every minute. Even as the days pass, and I wish bedtime would swoop in, I'm thankful for these days.

11/24- I am thankful my parents made me take piano lessons for 15 years. I can remember dragging my heals to each lesson, but my mom pushed me in the door every time. THANKS MOM! I am thankful that I can read music and pick up and play just about anything.

11/25- Life time movies. They're short, to the point and have enough drama to keep you awake. Love 'em.

---yeah, I know its not the 26th yet, but I am on a roll with things I'm thankful for... so I'm going with it.

11/26- living in the USA. I don't think I need to expand much on this, but I will, because its my blog, and I can. I am thankful I can pray to my God. I am thankful that I can say what I want, when I want to, where I want to. I am thankful that I have every opportunity to make my life how I want it. I am thankful for our freedom and for the men and women who have given it to us, time and time again.

11/27- I am thankful for recyclable bags. They're a fab invention and thankfully there are some super cute ones.

11/28- I am thankful for this blog. It has been a journey. And it will continue to be, I'm sure. I don't know what opportunities blogging has in store for me, but I'll keep on, keeping on. Speaking of blogging opportunities, I'm sure you've noticed the buttons on the right side of my blog- with the excitement of being a "public" blog now, I've joined a ton of networking sites. I encourage you (mommas) out there to do the same. I want to keep ((it)) a surprise, but I got a package in the mail (as told by Ryan), that will be another give away! I am SO excited- for me, for you- for these fabulous companies that have entrusted me with hosting a givvvve awaaaayyyyyy! :) ...readers stay tuned... ;)

11/29- The Chelsea Tree House. How could one not be thankful for a safe, enclosed playground, where your children can run a muck, and you, can sit back and drink coffee?

11/30- My Lord. I did save this one for last, because He is the reason I can even be thankful for everything I've listed. He gives me new days. He gives me forgiveness. He gives me the will to be a better person, to get up and do something. He gives me hope. I have promise in Him. I am thankful that I am able to worship the only God who saves. I am thankful that I am saved.

I hope everyone has a terrific Thanksgiving. Stay safe, eat turkey and be thankful. :)

oops. Happy Late Thanksgiving!

With all the excitement of Black Friday I forgot to post about our Thanksgiving. It was absolutely wonderful :) From beginning to end, it was a fabulous day! Even though my stupid tooth was still bothering me...
We started out with making a giant breakfast here at our house. My family came over and ate- very impressed with our cooking skills :) And then Ryan, Maeve and I watched the "Macy's Day Parade." Maeve loved it. She was dancing in front of the tv and squealing in delight at all the colorful balloons and floats. After breakfast and the parade, we got cleaned up and dressed (we had been in our PJs all morning...ahhhhh) and headed over to my parents house to see what was up. Not too much- :) Our fave. surrogate cousin/aunt wasn't there yet and everyone was laying around watching football... blah. So we came back to our house for a nap. And yea for naps- Maeve slept from about 1 or so, to 4:30!!!!!! :) YEAH!!!! Ryan crashed on the couch in front of the game and I was so exhausted from all the dang vicodin I had been taking for my tooth that I just about passed out in our bedroom.
Around 5 we went back over to my parents house, which by this time was bustling whttp://www.blogger.com/post-edit.g?blogID=622282368607302605&postID=2724973311278023543ith lots of people and activity. It was pretty much your very traditional thanksgiving feast- a huge dinner with lots of family gathered around a giant table. It was nice though :)
We left shortly after dinner- my tooth was still bothering me :( In fact I had to ice the stupid thing after dinner because eating had really irritated it. On the way home from my parents house Ryan asked if maybe, just perhaps I wouldn't be feeling up to getting up in the morning for black friday shopping. I answered with a gusto: NOPE!!!!! haha... so off we went to bed with our alarm clock set for 4:30 AM.
It really was a nice thanksgiving and there are so many things for us to be thankful for that the holiday that once was about stuffing ourselves with as much food as possible has now turned into a day to reflect and think about our blessings... AND still stuff yourself with as much food as possible :)

In honor of Thanksgiving, I feel I should list out what I am personally thankful for:

1. My family- my mom and dad are the best, as are my siblings :)
2. Disney World :)
3. Ryan
4. Maeve
5. Health
6. True Happiness
7. Vacations of any sort...
8. nap time
9. Target
10.God's good grace and unconditional love

***Just a note- the list in no particular ranking order! :) I think you all can guess what I am MOST thankful for... :)

Ahhh Thank You.

So many thank- yous are due right now!! Again, I am feeling blessed to be me- even with my giant, swollen and sore cheek. But I have an awesome family that knows how to step up when its needed. Last night, as I had mentioned before, my mom came over to stay with Maeve while I was up at the ER. What a blessing to have her and my dad so close that they can be there for us in a snap! Today, my mom took me out for some soup at Paneras (yuuuummmmmyyyyy- first time I'd eaten in 2 days) and made sure I was stocked up on soup for tonight. After lunch, she came back to my house and put Maeve down for her nap while I took a bath and laid down for a nap. Ryan came home around 3 for "lunch" and made me cinnamon rolls and laid with me and held an ice pack on my cheek. And this evening, my inlaws are coming over to play with Maeve and feed her dinner while I get some more rest. Its so nice to know that we have a great big safety net of people surrounding our family!

Thank you mom for being the best nanna in the whole world- for loving Maeve and taking awesome care of her.

Thank you inlaws (Mike & Becky) for stepping in and giving us a hand when we need it! :)

Thank you friends for all the get wells and good wishes.

Thank you Ryan for being my slushie-getter, neck rubber, ice pack holder husband.

Thank you Maeve for being my reason for everything :)

Thank you Lord for OVERALL good health, and this strong body and mind You've given me.

I've Realized...

after watching Maeve get poked and prodded that I can't handle anything worse than her having pneumonia.

I'd rather be sick than her... (I already knew that, but at night watching her sniffle and whimper, I wished more than anything that I was the sick one...)

I have mommy instincts.

Baby Diarrhea comes in every color of the rainbow...

it doesn't matter how tired we are... Maeve is still sick and requires us to be at our 100 percent.

Nothing beats staying home all weekend with my family :) -Ryan didn't have to work on Saturday so from Friday at 3:00 on, he was ALL OURS!!!

A warm bath in the middle of the night sometimes does the trick to get Maeve back to sleep.

Again, how blessed we are to have Maeve! In an instant things can change and I am continually thankful and grateful that we have our bug!

Mama Said There'd Be Days Like This...

OH MY GOSH I had such an awful, horribly terrible day yesterday (9/10). Lets start off with me completely smashing into another car... YEAH. I was backing out of my parents driveway and totally caved in the side of this poor womans car. Luckily she wasn't in it, but her car is badly damaged and guess who pays... OH and the whole back of my car is nicely dented.

Then ironically, as I was driving home MY car started smoking out of the hood. It smelled like burning sugar... I made it home and it was still smoking and making this horrible noise. I called Ryan, he came home and took my car in... I need a new radiator fan and a repair in the coolant tank... obviously the rear end needs fixing too.

Also, prayers are needed for a good freind of mine... she's suffered a devestating loss.

Anyways, life is tough right now- but its a LOT tougher for some others. I am thankful and feel completely blessed to have my cranky, teething, HEALTHY daughter.

Thankful.

Yesterday was so incredibly horrible, I can hardly blog about it. I ended up calling the doctor Monday morning to set up an appointment for Miss Maeve because she was still acting sick and cranky. They got us right in that morning- I was thinking she had an ear infection so I wasn't even thinking too much about the appointment.

When we got there, we had to wait back in the little room for about 20 minutes- THAT was hard as heck itself- Maeve wanted DOWNNNNNN. She wanted to crawl all over the grubby, contaminated floors and when I wouldn't let her- WOOOOOOAHHHH baby (actually i should say WAAAAAAHHHHH baby). She was a nightmare- screaming, kicking, flailing around, etc. I was trying to keep her on my lap and entertain her with my keys and my cell phone- she whacked me across the face with the phone and actually threw the keys on the floor. I know, I am such a bad mom for not letting her play in the bio-hazard bin right??? Jeeshhhh.

Finally the doc came in and we did the whole pinning her down thing while she checked her ears, nose, throat and belly. The doc. said she noticed some redness in her throat- so she thought she probably had strep. She ordered a strep test and thats when the real madness started. The nurse came in and told me to hold Maeve's arms and legs down, while she (the nurse) would hold her head and swab. So I put Maeve up on the table and was holding her arms and legs and the nurse seriously- put her in a headlock. I was like "okay, whatever, I guess thats what they have to do to get a swab." Well of course Maeve did NOT like it one bit and started to scccreeeeeeaaaaammmm and flail like a fish. The nurse kept ramming that dang swab in her mouth and Maeve was coughing and choking and gagging like crazy- at one point she couldn't even catch her breath because she was choking so bad. I started sobbing, and was telling the nurse "Okay! Thats enough now! She's done!" But the nurse kept saying "I gotta get it!" So this went on for about 2 minutes (which isn't a lot of time) but it really is when your kid is gagging and looking at you with those eyes, and trying to mottle out a cry but can't because she's out of breath and choking so badly. It was horrible. As soon as BI-atch nurse was done I scooped my girl up and cried with her. I'm sure it was a pathetic scene but I couldn't help it. When she gets her shots its sad, but its over soooo quickly and Maeve hardly cries- this was so different. It was like she was scared and suffering through the whole throat swab ordeal. And to watch your child upset, hurt and scared is completely heartbreaking. Which leads me to the whole purpose of this post- not to tell you about Maeve's throat swab (which turned out to be negative) but to tell you all how thankful I am that I had to watch her ONLY get a throat swab.

Do you ever watch that St. Judes show on Sunday mornings? Ryan has to come in and shut it off sometimes because I will just sit there and sob. I pray everyday that God will never put me in the situation that those parents are in. How can they be so strong and bring their child in for pokes, tests, scans and surgeries day after day after day??? I can't even wrap my head around it. It really makes Maeve's whole shot/swab incidents seem completely insignificant, and in the grand scheme of things, it really is. Next time we go in for an appointment, I will look at things differently, and be thankful that I am taking her in for a "wellness" check at the local pedi.

To conclude this very depressing post(I feel like Debbie Downer right now) , I am very, unbelievably THANKFUL to at this point, only had to have dealt with shots and a throat swab. Life could be so much worse.
I need to make it a point every day, no matter how busy life gets, to send up a thankful prayer. Because really, we are SO blessed and I am truly thankful for what He has given us.
