Estella June... 8/13/2011

I have two kids eating breakfast and one in the swing... I should be good for about 5 minutes ;)   I had such an awesome, amazing birth- I really want to share it!  The problem is finding 30 minutes to sit down (alone) and type it out...

Thursday, August 11th, I had my appointment.  The midwife checked me, and said I was 2 cm, 75% effaced.  She didn't strip my membranes or anything- just set up an appointment for Tuesday, August 16th (my due date).  I was gearing up for another weekend of being pregnant.

Shortly after my appointment, I started getting some contractions.  They were probably 10 minutes apart, not very strong- not painful at all, just regular.  As the day and night went on, they got a little stronger, but they were still 10 minutes apart (sometimes more).

Friday morning I woke up feeling strange.  In fact, I posted on my facebook status that day "Feeling a little funny... I was up all night with contractions... Praying this is early labor!!"

I can't even really put a finger on what was so strange feeling- it just was.  I didn't have an appetite at all and I was incredibly tired and grouchy.  I was also suuuper thirsty- I think I drank 10 bottles of water that day, at least!

As the day progressed, my contractions got closer together- but still not close enough to call or do anything about them.  Around 6 or so, they were consistently 5-6 minutes apart.  I called the office and they said it sounded like early labor- I was told to wait until they were 5 minutes apart and painful.  So what's a girl to do while waiting for labor to kick in?  Why, go eat some spicy Mexican food, right?!?  HA!!!  Bad idea.  BAD idea.  That's all I'm saying about that.

Friday night (after Mexican), my contractions were 4-5 minutes apart, so I called back and was told to go up to L&D to get checked.  YAY!

My mom came over around 9 or 10... and Ryan and I headed up to L&D.

This is so, so, so silly- but I was really nervous about seeing the L&D for the first time.  I am familiar with Foote's/Allegiance's L&D ward;  I was hoping it would be just like that.  I was already ticked it was on the 2nd floor instead of the 4th- like I said- SO DUMB... what can I say though?  I'm a creature of habit... Thank goodness, I was pleasantly surprised to find that Flagler's L&D is absolutely beautiful.  HUGE rooms with flat screens and refrigerators and of course, the rooms are overlooking the bay front- complete with a view of the lighthouse.  Pretty nuts :)

Alright- back to the birth story... after I decided that I loved Flagler's L&D, I calmed down a little bit and settled in.  They put me in a triage room first and as I was lying there with contractions, I was thinking "I've gotta be 4 centimeters at least.  Who can have contractions for 2 days and not have any change?"  The nurse (who's name I've forgotten, but was SO nice) checked me and said I was 2.  WHAAA????    I was sooooo bummed!  They monitored me for an hour or so, and concluded my contractions were 4-5 minutes apart, but not strong enough.  They sent me home to labor and told me to come back when I couldn't talk through a contraction.

As I was getting dressed, I had a good, strong contraction.  On the walk back to the car, I had another one- and by the time we got home (20-25 minute drive) I'd had a handful of semi-painful contractions.  We got home around midnight, sent my mom home and I geared up for a long night.

I managed to fall asleep for about 30 minutes but was woken up by a realllly strong contraction.  I think it was about 1:30 am?  Ryan was snoozing away and thus began the long night of labor!

I took about 20 showers (no joke), paced the hallway, facebooked, blogged, etc.  It was around 4 AM that the contractions became super ouchy.   I started timing them on the contraction timer gadget and was thrilled to find they were 4 minutes apart- almost on the dot!  In between contractions, I was okay- but during the actual contraction I was having to breathe, stop whatever I was doing, focus on getting through it, etc.  Around 5 AM, I texted my sister and said "tell mom to get up- get over here quick- this is definitely labor!"  At 6 AM, I called my midwife and said "I'm in labor- for sure."  She gave me the go ahead, and we started getting ready for our 2nd trip to L&D.

My mom and Emily got to our house around 6:30 and we were at the hospital by 7.  They triaged me again, but this time, I was positive I had made change and I'd be admitted.  And I was right ;)  I was just about 4 cm and my contractions were good and strong.  The nurse who checked me, said "Your water is going to break any second- its bulging- so just be prepared for that."  YESSSS!!!

At 7:30, they moved me into one of the delivery rooms.  Ryan and Emily were with me- Emily was the photographer/birth coach. ;)

The nurse asked if I was going to get an epidural- before she even ended the question I said, "YES!"  She said it could take awhile for the anesth. to get up to me, so she'd put the order in right away.  I'm a little bit blurry on the next couple of hours- but I think I got the epidural around 9:30 or so?  The epi guy was great- SO fast and SO good.  I felt instant relief.

Right after the epi went in (the anesthesiologist was still in the room) my water broke.  I have never had my water break naturally- it was pretty cool!

The nurse came in to check and I was at a 6.  I couldn't believe how fast this was going!  With Maeve it took me like 15 hours to get to 6 cm.  With Henry it took maybe 8 hours or so...

We were fixin' to have a baby before noon with the way this labor was going! :)

Around 11:30, the midwife came in and said she was going to give me a teeny tiny bump of pitocin to get me over the last little hump.  The pit was plugged in for about 10 minutes and then was turned off again because it was making me contract too much.  The nurse said "You've gotta be a full 10- are you feeling pressure to push yet?"  I was hesitant to say I wanted to push because in the past, I've pushed for great lengths of time- I told myself this time around, I was going to wait until I couldn't not push- hopefully reducing my pushing time.

My midwife came in around noon and checked me and said "Umm your baby is right here mam!  We're going to push."  I hung out (feeling the urge to push- but not full out pushing- just pushing enough to where it was making me feel comfortable) for a few minutes while they set up the room.  About 15 minutes later, I said "Okay I really feel like I need to push now."

The midwife said to go ahead- I pushed for about 3 seconds and she said "STOP!  Let me put my gown on and get everyone here- you're having a baby NOW!"

In a flash, the room was filled and Anah (my midwife) said "Go ahead- give me a little push and your baby is going to be out."  I pushed for about 10 seconds, and her head was out.  One more little push and she was delivered.  So... no joke- my total pushing time was maybe 2 minutes or something crazy like that.  It was AWESOME.

Little Stella June was born at 12:20, with a full head of hair and the teeniest, little legs I'd ever seen!  She weighed 7 lbs. 11 oz, and was 19 inches long.

They put her on me right away, and I kept asking "Is she 9 lbs?  Do you think she's 9 lbs?"  Everyone laughed and said that she wasn't even 8.

The nurses took her and did all the baby stuff.  I did end up with a super small tear that needed a few stitches- but its been nothing, compared to the "damage" done in the past!

There are about 200 things I could list off that I loved about Flagler hospital- and one of them, was the post- labor clean up!  While Stella was getting weighed, measured, and bathed in the nursery, my nurses helped me take a shower in the bathroom.  These showers were amazing- they were lined with soft benches and all sorts of different shower heads- it was like one of those fancy showers where you're hit with water from all angles- it felt amazing.

After the shower, they had me try and eat something.  I wish I would have had Emily take a picture of the meal they sent me- it was too funny.  I actually don't remember the main course, but I was cracking up about the drink and dessert; sweet tea & banana cake! : )  We are definitely in the south!

It seems like I was in the actual labor room for a lonnnng time before they moved me to the postpartum unit.  I found out later that it was because Stells was having a hard time keeping up her body temp. so they had put her in a warmer for a bit.

The post partum experience was wonderful as well.  These rooms were like hotel rooms- heck, we had a DVD player and mini kitchen!  We joked about how we could've stayed there all week!

My favorite thing about the hospital stay was they let you go- meaning, there was nobody hounding me to do this or that.  In my other labors, I have these nightmares about the lactation ladies coming by and torturing me to tears about breastfeeding this way and that.

I did see a lactation consultant a few times, but she'd come in and ask how it was going, I'd say "great!"  And that was that.  She didn't need to SEE my boobs or poke and prod.  It was a very nice experience.

Overall, on a scale of 1-10, I'd rate this birth as an 11.  It was over the top wonderful.  I can't think of a single thing I'd change or do differently.  Everything- from Friday evening to our departure on Monday morning was 100 percent fabulous.  I can't say enough about the staff- every single person was awesome and made me feel like home.

As for the actual labor and delivery, (and I have my midwives to thank for this one) it was beyond words.  Thank GOD they didn't induce me and I was allowed to go on my own.  Everything was so natural.  It is amazing what your body will do, when its READY to do it.  I think back to my induction with both other kids- how HARD those early contractions were and how awful the pushing was.  Yes, of course, these "natural" contractions hurt (and yes, I did get an epidural around 5/6 cm) but the difference was, everything felt natural.  It all felt like it was supposed to be happening; does that make sense?  Especially with the pushing- it was unlike any experience I'd ever had before.    I was grinning from ear to ear the entire time!  My body was just ready to do it!  It was calm, serene- so tranquil in the room.  No counting or breathing on command- it was just me, doing what nature intended our bodies to do.

IF there is a 4th (and that's a huge IF.. .Ryan's already made comments like "Wow I can't believe this is our last baby.") I would adamantly refuse an induction unless medically necessary.

I'm not sure this experience can ever be topped.  It was seriously, the best ever.

Coming home, on the other hand, has been tough.  I can't lie- its been really, really tough.  I feel like I can't give enough attention to each kid.  And yes, I do remember feeling this way after having Henry- but its compiled this time with having 3 kids to split time with.

Stella needs me pretty much every 2-3 hours, which puts me out of commission with the other kids for at least 30-45 minutes, while I nurse her.  In between feedings, I'm scrambling to make sure everyone else (Maeve & Henry) are taken care of and as happy as can be.

Maeve loves Stella more than anything and is all over her ALL the time.  This is both the sweetest and irritating thing ever.  Sweetest, because there is nothing better than seeing your kids love each other.  It's the best feeling in the world.  Irritating, because she wants to hold her and poke her and give her pacis 24/7.  I will have just finished feeding Stells,  have her all swaddled, napping in her bassinet and look over to see Maeve trying to jam the paci in her mouth.  Or Stella will be in her swing and I look over to see Maeve trying to pry her eyes open.  It's just a little bit much, ya know?  But at the same time, I want her to be involved with Stella- any ideas on how to not discourage her from being interested but not over the top/waking her up all the time?

Henry on the other hand, does not have a clue what to think.  He does say "TELLA TELLA TELLA" and he'll point and poke at her, but other than that, he's pretty indifferent.  And I wouldn't expect much more from an (almost) 2 year old.

Ryan has been home with us and will continue to be at home with us until next Monday!  Stella picked a good time to come into this world. Ryan happens to be super slow at work and his supervisor said he could have the entire week off.  :)

Emotionally, I've got the good ol' baby blues.  It's not uncommon to find me crying while looking at Stella, thinking about how fast she's going to grow up.  I've cried thinking about ridiculous things- like the first time she'll ride the bus, or not wanting to be around me when she's a teenager.  For real- why are pregnancy hormones so CRAZY???  If the same thing hadn't happened with Maeve and Henry, I'd fear I was losing it completely.  Thankfully, I usually get out of this funk within a week or so.

My goal for the next few days is to get out of the house as a whole family.  At the moment, it feels impossible, but I know once I do it, I'll have a lot more confidence!

Thank you, thank you, thank you for all the thoughts and prayers throughout this entire journey.

I can't tell you the love I feel in my heart.  I wake up each morning, thinking my life is too good to be true!  We are so immensely blessed!!!

And... to end this post, is a list of "things" I don't ever, ever want to forget about the labor and delivery of Miss STELLA JUNE!
  • My hearty plate of Mexican nachos the night I went into labor.  I think they might have assisted with my contractions.
  • Reading 3 issues of People magazine, front to back, while laboring in the shower overnight.
  • My nurse, Linda.  She's a saint.  I'm sure of it.
  • Telling my anesthesiologist, (who happened to be pretty good looking) "this was the best I've ever had!"
  • Having my water break on its own, and asking if I had peed or if it was my water.
  • When Maeve first saw Stella, she exclaimed "SHE'S JUST LIKE BABY JESUS!"
  • Henry paging the nurse (with the "pull if you need help" thing above the bed)
  • the awesome southern food- banana cake, sweet tea, grits, huge chocolate chip cookies
  • all of the amazing visitors that drove from near and far to come and see us.
  • My grandma and mom, hauling up giant balloons and a zillion pink outfits with tutus :)
  • watching teen mom, while giving birth... I remember laughing because in the background, someone was arguing about their baby daddy ;) haaaah
  • Maeve's doctor kit- My mom got Maeve a doctor kit to bring to the hospital- she introduced herself to every nurse that came in the room, as "Dr. Maeve."  :)
  • My post partum nurse, Angela- another saint.  She snuck in pieces of extra banana cake for me.
  • the smell of a newborn.  Is there anything like it???

PS- I am DYING to take some pics of Stella!  Hopefully we'll have some time in the next couple of days to set everything up and do some!  I'll post soon!

Things To Remember.

I keep meaning to write this post- I didn't keep a baby book with Henry, but instead blogged about my prenatal visits, pregnancy ups & downs, belly pics, etc. I know I already blogged about Henry's birth story, but I didn't add in all the *special* moments, people and memories that I don't ever want to forget. With that said.....

*My awesome nurse Michelle Scott (she's Dr. Scott's wife actually!). She was amazing and truly my lifeline. It's funny that you rely so much on complete strangers during your labor. I probably won't ever see her again, but I'll always have a warm spot for her. She was great :)

*After my water was broken I stood up to go to the bathroom and there was a FLOOD- then in a panic I ran to the bathroom leaving a giant water path in my wake. I was too embarrassed to call the nurse to have her come clean up the giant mess so Ryan got on his hands and knees to clean up the spill. I sat on he bed laughing hysterically (in between contractions of course:)

*Dr. P & the nurse came in to break my water. After he broke it, Michelle asked if I was going to want an epidural anytime soon. Feeling brave and *OKAY* I said "No... not yet." Two seconds after she left the room, I got my first post-water breaking contraction and instantly regretted my response to her question. Next time she was in the room I was BEGGING for an epi!

*The moment I realized that my epidural actually worked this time- PRICELESS! haha :)

*Walking the halls for what seemed like hours (but was really only 45 minutes?) and hearing a girl screeeeaming her lungs out in a room. I started crying and had to go back to our room- I think I was seriously considering boycotting the whole induction and making an escape! :)

*When the nurse came in to check me after I got my epi- I was 7 cm. and she told me that if I feel the urge to push to make sure and let her know. I said okay. She left the room and I felt the urge to push- Ryan ran out and got her, she came back in, checked me, and said "you're ready!" What a great moment!

*When Henry came out and Dr.P put him on me- I thought he was a teeny 6 lbr. again. After they stabilized him and weighed him, they shouted over to me that he was 8.7. Even Dr. P had to say "WHAT??? 8.7??" :)

*While getting stitched up, Michelle lifted up my dang umbilical cord to show it off to everyone in the room. There were "oohs & ahhs" all around- apparently it was a really nice looking cord? :)

*After the whole birth when the nurse pushed on my uterus to get it to contract, urine literally shot out half way across the room. oops:) At this point, I'd lost any modesty so I just had to laugh. I DID say sorry though :)

*The cafeteria was closing at 7 PM and I wouldn't be in my postpartum room until around 7:30-8ish, so they nurses told me to order something because I needed to eat. I really didn't want to eat in the horrid birth room that still had yucky towels and gross stuff all over the place but I was STARVING. So I ordered a yogurt and fruit. Ryan was also pretty hungry (those guys work hard ya know) so he went down to the cafeteria and loaded up a giant plate filled with burritos, cheese, rice and beans. Um. Yuck. Even the nurses were a bit appalled that he was eating that right away... they warned me to not even look at it- I might vomit! :)

*Going to my postpartum room, they asked me if I needed a wheel chair. I felt really good so I said "no." But little did I know my body was still numb from the epi. I had nurses on both sides, completely freaking out about me falling. I kept saying "I feel fine! I just can't feel my right leg- that's why I'm wobbly!"

*My night nurse, Liz- absolutely wonderful :)

*When Dr. VanSchoik came in to get Henry for his circumcision the next morning... I was the one who had just gone through labor AND breastfed a baby through the whole night. But who was the one snoring on the couch??? Yup, Ryan. It actually got so uncomfortable Dr. V had to stop his conversation with me about the circumcision and address Ryan's snoring. I think he said something like "You've gotta give us guys some credit, right?" After the doc left Ryan got a book thrown at him...

*The ridiculous students who were in and out ALL DAY LONG. I know they've got to learn, but WOW. All I wanted to do was sleep and not only were they having to do a bunch of stuff on me, but then they'd sit there and talk about it and take notes. I got annoyed really fast. One time when they knocked on the door, I made it to the bathroom as fast as I could and told them I really needed to take a shower...

*Bonding with Henry over breastfeeding... Maeve didn't breastfeed for a few weeks- so it was amazing for me to have that with him right away.

All in all, it was a great birth experience! I'm sure there were a lot more funny, priceless, memorable moments- but these are ones that stick out that I HAD to write down before they eluded me.

Henry's Birth Story... 11/23/2009

Okay- where to start??? I guess Monday morning- I was one of those annoying people that call RIGHT ON THE DOT- 5 AM. (maybe even 4:59). L&D said to come up around 6:15 so we started getting around. Took a shower, did some last minute things around the house, waited for my mom to arrive and somehow ate breakfast (even though my stomach was in a giant knot!). When I was induced with Maeve we waited in registration for about a half hour so this time we thought we should get there a little earlier in order to get up to L&D by 6:15. haha- this time registration was dead! Not a person in there! I got registered and put in a room by 6... a nurse was in right away to hook up the IV and ask all those dumb questions (are you in an abusive situation? Do you have a problem with crack/coccaine?) Around 7 they started the pitocin. I was already having contractions 5-7 minutes apart, so the pitocin definitely added a little kick to them! Dr. P came in around 8 or so and broke my water and assured me I will NOT go home preggo! WAHOO! :) INSTANTLY- I mean the next contraction- after my water was broken, I was in some major pain. My contractions started coming consistently around 3-4 minutes apart. I labored in bed for about 2 hours- thinking "OMG this is going so fast!! I'm going to have this baby before noon!" The nurse came in to check on my progress and told me I had not changed A BIT!!! Even though my contractions were good and strong, I shot up in bed and said "WHAT????" She told me to get up and do some walking...

Ryan and I walked the halls of 4 North :) for about 45 minutes or so. I was in a ton of pain- each contraction I felt like I was going to fall into a pool of jello onto the floor. I could definitely feel a pick up in the intensity and frequency of the contractions. I thought we should head back to the room because I wasn't sure I could stay on my feet much longer- also, the screaming coming from one of the rooms was freaking me out!!!

Back in the room I decided to give the rocking chair a try. THIS is what got me through until I got the epidural. I kind of got into a trance just rocking through my contractions- they still hurt like crazy heck but the rocking seemed to help. The doc came back in around 1 and checked me- 5 cm! YEAH!! I had made enough progress to get an epidural! :) I requested one immediately- for 2 reasons: My first epidural with Maeve didn't work- and if that were to happen again I wanted enough time to be able to get another one. And 2, I remembered that when getting one with Maeve, the anestisiologist didn't actually get to my room for like an hour. This time, luck was on my side though :) The anest. got there within about 30-45 minutes AND the epi worked like a charm. I could've kissed that guy who put a catheter in my back! :) While I was getting the epi I started to get the shakes really bad. The nurse said it was because I was probably transitioning. After the epi was in place and I had some time to relax she checked me again- I was 7-8 cm. She told me that if I started to feel pressure I needed to let her know. NO JOKE- within 5 minutes of her leaving the room, I felt a huge urge to push. I told Ryan to get the nurse. She came back in, checked me, and said "You're ready to go! You have nothing left! Not even a lip of cervix!"

I started pushing around 4:30. It was hard. Really, really hard. Finally around 4:50 I had pushed the baby's head down enough that Dr. P was called in. I have to say- this was probably the worst pain I've ever felt- worse than with Maeve. The Dr. looked while I pushed and then said "Ashley- STOP pushing- do not push." I think I might have sworn. :) But next thing I knew Dr. P was pushing the baby's head back in- um... PAINFUL. I heard him say "nuchal cord x2" and since I watch baby shows religiously I knew that the cord was wrapped around his neck twice, and that's why he had to get the head back in- to unwrap the cord. SOMEHOW, by the grace of GOD I held off on pushing while he untangled the cord. Then I heard a snip and I gave one last huge push and out came Mr. Henry Ryan McKenney! He was born at 4:59 PM.

The doc put him on me right away, but he was blue and not breathing and super limp. I kept asking anyone and everyone if he was okay- a nurse swept in and grabbed him and shouted into the hallway to call pediatrics. I was in a full blown panic. It was probably a minute or so before he even made a whimper. FINALLY, things started to calm down a bit and Henry started making teeny tiny kitten-like noises. It was completely terrifying. Thankfully, everything was fine and I got to hold my bubba beans. He felt so tiny- even though he weighed 8.7 & 20.5 inches long! I couldn't believe it! Woooahhh baby! After getting stitches (UGH yes... another episiotomy- thankfully, the Dr. said this one wasn't as bad as my first one) and a stupid cath. (for some reason I couldn't pee after the birth) we got to move into post-partum.

I can't say enough wonderful and beautiful things about my little man. I am in love like I thought I couldn't be again. I wish I could snuggle him all day long. He is seriously the most amazing baby- he slept through his circumcision, his shots, all the blood pokes. Seriously- nothing phases this kid. And that's a good thing- because he's got one wild sissy to deal with! He's already had his nukies stolen out of his mouth, his arms stretched, his face poked at... he's such an angel. This is totally different for me since Maeve was quite the high maintenance baby!

We're home now- resting, getting to know Henry & spending time with Maeve. My parents offered to keep her for another night and as appealing as that sounded, I felt like she needed to be home. So here we are, all getting acquainted with each other :)

Thanks for all the thoughts & prayers! We're a family of FOUR!!!

Ohhhhh Baby!

I was tagged by my hot momma friend Julie :) Thanks!

1.Where were you when you first found out you when you found out you were pregnant?
In my ghetto apartment bathroom... I took a digital test, hopped in the shower, remembered that I had taken the test, poked my head out and saw it said "pregnant." I then sat down in the shower and repeated "Oh my gosh" about 100 times.
2.Who was with you? My dogs- Ryan was at class in Ann Arbor.
3.How did you find out? A Clearblue digital home pregnancy test!
4.What was your first reaction?
"OH MY GOSH" (as I stated before:) Fear, shock, panic, excitment...
5.What was your husbands reaction?
Haha.. by the time he had gotten home I had taken 4 preggo tests... they were all lined up in a row on the dresser. I met him at the door and said I have to talk to you... I told him I thought I was pregnant. He asked "why do you think that?" And I said "because I took a lot of preggo tests and they're all positive." He was like "okay...." After looking at the tests, he sat at the computer figuring out insurance stuff for a couple of hours. He was freaked out to say the least :)
6.Who was the first person you told?
Ryan- was the very first. (this happened on a Thursday night) and I kept it secret from EVERYONE until Tuesday morning when I was teaching and this mom said "are you alright?" And I was like "yeah why?" And she said "You're pregnant aren't you?" And I just started bawling! So unfortunately, some random mom was the 2nd person who found out. My mom was the 3rd, then my sisters, then my dad.
7.Were the pregnancies planned?
We weren't "TRYING" but we weren't preventing...
8.Was everyone happy for you? Yes.
9.What is the sex?
GIRL!!! ALL GIRL!
10.Did anyone throw a baby shower for you?
Yup, my moms good friends, Alice and Marilyn.
11.If yes who came?
Great friends, and some family
12.Did you get any outfits you knew you wouldn't use?
Haha... yes I will make a confession- I got 1 that was just horrendous. But I returned it...
13.How much weight did you gain?
UGH.... I started at 110 and got up to 150- so 40 freaking pounds. AH!!!
14.Did you get stretch marks?
YES. On my belly, boobs and hips. Nice huh?
15.Did you crave anything crazy?
Ohhhhh yes- fruit and cheese in the beginning. Milkshakes, gatorade, donuts and McDonalds at the end.
16.Who or what got on your nerves the most?
Moms who thought they knew EVERYTHING and would tell me about their experiences (good and bad). People who would say "How many weeks do you have left?" And I'd say 2 months and they'd be in shock. My heart palpatations that started up around 30 weeks or so... peeing constantly.
17.Where were you when you went into labor?
I was induced at Foote Hospital at 6 in the morning on October 10th.
18.Did you have any complications?
Yup- my first epidural didn't work, and my 2nd one worked for about 20 minutes then it was time to push. But I'd say the worst was the episiotomy- it was a 3rd degree cut/rip and it was paaaaaainful as heck. Worse than any contractions or pushing!!!!!!
19.Did your water break?
Yup- artificially :) The doc broke it with a huge needle looking thing!
20.Who drove you to the hospital?
Ryan. It was 5:30 am and soooooo dark and quiet. Neither one of us said a word the whole way.
21.Did you go early or late?
Maeve was born 6 days early.
22.Who was in the room?
Ryan, my mom and sister Meghan.
23. Did you videotape it?
Yes- and I was ticked off at the time but so thankful now. There are 2 shots that Meghan got that are a bit graphic but other than that its PG.
24.Did you have any pain medication?
Yes, 2 epidurals! And some demoral.
25.Did you have a c-section or natural?
Natural.
26.What was your reaction to the birth?
I was EXHAUSTED. But thrilled- she was born at 3 AM and by the time I got to my recovery room it was 5 or so, but I still couldn't sleep a bit. I just wanted to hold her and look at her. :) ahhhhhhhhh :)
27.How big was the baby?
6 lbs. 9 oz.
28.Did your husband cry?
Yes. A lot :)

So This Is How It Went...

One year ago to the day, our lives were forever changed. At 3 AM on the dot, my heart, my soul, my life, was born- in the package of a tiny 6 lb. 9oz. baby girl. She was perfect. I remember smelling her and thinking "how can I make sure she smells like this forever?" Her smell was comepletely pure, brand new and sweet. Holding her in my arms, looking down at God's miracle I thought "She is here and she is mine." Oh the possibilities! A brand new, perfect life- capable of anything-Would she be a dancer like my mom? A gymnast like me? A pianist? A violinist? A figure skater? A doctor? There were endless dreams and goals that raced through my mind. When I was pregnant, I had the attitude that "whatever she is destined to be is perfect for me." But as I held her and examined her- her perfection, 10 tiny fingers, 10 even teenier toes, the dimples in her back, the "angel kiss" on her lower hip, her innocent eyes, I couldn't help but think, "This girl is going to do great things- her fingers were long and skinny- perfect for the piano. Her tiny body, I thought would most definitely allow her to excell in gymnastics. And of course the look in her eyes told me that she was a strong willed, smart little cookie."
The time in the hospital was like a dream- (not like a dream in the sense that it was wonderful and carefree) but a dream- like it wasn't real. Looking back on it, I can only remember little details and moments. Strange details, like waking up and ordering french toast and cranberry juice every morning for breakfast. And looking in the mirror after I gave birth and actually smiling and saying outloud "I DID IT." But strangely, I don't remember spending a lot of time with Maeve- it seemed as though she was being held by everyone BUT me. I kept thinking I would get my moment with her, but as time passed, I was getting worried that she didn't know that I was her mom, that I was the one who just went through 20 some hours of labor and 10 months of pregnancy to get her into this world. But God is good, and one night, I got my moment- it was just me and Ryan in the room, Ryan was sleeping. I was holding my girl and watching some scary movie (it was around halloween time...). Maeve was snoozing away and I was about half asleep myself- but theres a rule at foote hospital- you can't sleep with your baby in the bed. So I was literally prying my eyelids open with my fingers because I didn't want to put her down. And just then, Maeve stirred- she opened her eyes blinked a few times, took a good long look at me and snuggled right back down to sleep. I remember getting very weepy- I thought "she knows its me!!!" She can feel and hear my heartbeat and she knows its me!" From that moment on, Maeve became my one and only. Yes, Ryan is my love and will always be my love. But Maeve is the reason I do everything. She is the reason I strive to be a better person. She is the reason I get up at the crack of dawn and make her waffles (they're her fave.) She is the reason I scrimp and save every penny so she can have the best we can afford. She is the source of my happiness and the light of my life.
You see, before Maeve, life was good- I was married to the most wonderful husband a girl could ask for. Life was easy, simple, good. But as soon as I saw the two lines on the pregnancy test a new layer, a new depth was added to our "simple lives." I couldn't have known it back then, that I would fall head over heels in love with this child- I mean I knew I would love her, but I didn't understand the KIND of love I would have for her.
Now here we are, one year to the day, my husband is working hard at putting together all of Maeves new birthday presents so they'll be up and running for her in the morning. And here I sit, blubbering about my love obsession with my daughter. To be honest, I never, EVER knew you could love someone so much. But you can, and you do- the moment you hear that cry, see your child, feel the weight of your baby on your chest, that love is there- and its intense and the most real, strongest love there is. This child of mine, could do ANYTHING- commit murder- and I would love her to the ends of the earth. She has me- she has her daddy too :) There is nothing she could ever tell me, or do that would make me love her less. She owns my heart, she is my purpose in life.
Today was surprisngly very sad for me. It marked a year of having Maeve here, but it also marked a year that is gone. I can't ever have my Maeve back in her teeny tiny preemie clothes. I can't breastfeed her, I can't put her in the bassinet, I can't swaddle her and hold her for hours like I used to. I now have a toddler- an independent, full of personality toddler. It completely blows my mind! This is why, I think that my mother continued to have children. It is extremely sad watching your baby grow up. Don't get me wrong- its exciting as heck watching her learn new things everyday, but gosh I miss my newborn!
Anyhow, her birthday was wonderful. Full of memories of last year- (I kept thinking..."Its 11 P.M., at this time last year I was getting an epidural." We all had a great day- full of Maeve. What more could we ask for?

I will end this post by thanking the One who has given her to us. The One who blessed us in more ways than I thought were ever possible. I pray that He gives us a full life of our Maeve- I am excited to see the child she will be- the pictures she will draw and bring home to display proudly on our fridge. The woman she will become, the wife, the mother in her.

Motherhood is completely amazing- I never thought it was possible to be this happy, this content, this peaceful. The Lord has truly blessed us. And we pray that He will bless us again, and again (and maybe again :) with more children.

Happy Birthday my sweet girl :) Momma and Daddy love you more than life itself...
