I need some help!!!

Leave it to me to wait until the last minute to get a breast pump...

I can't seem to make up my mind- help me out!!!

Here's my stich:
I am a stay-at-home mom (duh) meaning I won't need to pump butt loads of milk because I'll be home all day, everyday with the baby. I had an electrical duo pump of some sort last time around and it gave me some horrible infections because the pump didn't actually PUMP- it more like PULLED... we finally figured out that was why my milk ducts were getting clogged. I've been looking and looking, reading reviews and talking to friends, and it seems like I might just skip on spending the 150 bucks this time around and get a single manual pump. Like I said, I really don't pump enough to justify spending trillions of dollars on a breast pump... but on that same token, they don't make double manual pumps (for obvious reasons!) so if I remember correctly, when I would pump, milk would come out of both boobs- not just the one I was pumping. If I am using a single pump, wouldn't I be wasting an entire boob of milk? (haha that sounds funny :) Also, for anyone who's tried a manual pump, does it kill your hand pumping? I've heard that manual pumps are actually more efficient with getting the milk out... I used to be able to get 8 oz. out of each breast in about 5-10 minutes while nursing Maeve... and I found THAT to be a horrible pain in the butt! So if I am going to have to sit there and squeeze the handle of the manual pump for an hour to get 6 oz. count me out!

I hope someone out there has some advice on this! I HATE breast pumps- I hate spending the money on them & I hate cleaning all the parts... ughhhhhh.

So, I was actually pumping while I was reading this!!! hahahaa.

I have the Medela-mother of all pumps-make you feel like a cow pump. But, I work part time and it was the most practical. My insurance covered it and we just had to be 20%. It ended up being 40 bucks for us. Check your insurance.

I work with a girl and her sister had a manual single pump. She said it hurt and she hated it!

What I do is feed Ruby before I leave for work on one side ((she usually gets enough with just one side)) and then pump the other when I get to work, then alternate pump the other side next time. Or, sometimes I will pump half the bottle on one side and half on the other side. So, I am not wasting a boob. :) hahah. It does sound funny.

Hope this helps.

Just get the Medela single Swing pump :) It works amazing for me and it's only about $150 or so at Target.

thanks girls!

my insurance only covers it if the baby has a cleft lip/palate or if he has to stay in the hospital and I can't nurse him. HOPEFULLY neither one of those things will happen.

Leslie I am SO jealous of your pump!!!!!!!!!

So Jules- you used a single pump & didn't waste a boob? :) Didn't it squirt out everywhere while you were pumping on one side?

Nooooo LOL. I just flip one side of my bra down and the other stays up and I am wearing a breast pad so it leaks a little onto the pad. No biggie. I so NO to a manual pump. Total waste of money even if you aren't going to pump often. I promise you. DO NOT buy a manual, they are worthless. Just get the Swing and it will be the best thing for you :)

yup just went to target and got the swing... I'm excited to use it. My midwife said I could start pumping now to start some contractions!! haha... I think I'll wait until Sunday to try that though... I really do kind of want to wait until Monday now! Weird since I was soooo ready for him to come! Now I'm nervous and want to be prepared!

Glad to hear you got a pump. I vote no on manual too. I pumped before Ruby to get those contractions started. At that point, I was going to try anything.

Sounds like you have everything under control, but just in case you're still looking-I had the Avent Isis manual pump (I also had an electric) and I actually really liked it! It was only $50 at Target. It didn't hurt at all, it was actually what Laura (your midwife who was mine at the time) suggested. So if you're still in the market I'd highly recommend that one. (I never leaked and never had to wear nursing pads ever when I was nursing, so I don't know about that part...although I'm sure if you do what 'Kase and Jules' said it would work.) I'd get a good 10 ounces on 1 side sometimes with that manual :) so I'd say it worked very well! Good luck!

I have the medela ( cow one ) too. Its was like close to $300 though. double sided, electric, its great. But I have a single manual one too and like in the car and stuff its awesome. It never killed my hand cuz its not hard to pump. When you are letting down, just hold it down and let it spray, just pump every so often. Once your let down stops, pump regularly. Saves your hand and is faster. But at home, I can hook up the double one, turn it on and have both sides done in 8 minutes. Guess its just a matter of opionion. good luck! I was at target too, looking for a pink car seat cover, and they were all out...I don't even know if they were pink though :(

thanks thanks thanks!!! Good to hear that a manual would work well too- maybe if I get sick of cleaning all the junk for the electric I'll get a manual for those quick pumps on the go! They're cheap enough that I could always do that... but I'm excited to finally own a medela... its like the prada of breastpumps! :)
