Tell Me Something I Don't Know

Okay, okay... this is a totally redundant post since I've already updated you all on the kids and their likes/loves.  But I am working on scrapping a book for each year of their lives.  And I'm trying to come up with these little photo milestones to stick in each book... here's what I've got:

Cute for scrapbooks?  I think so... thank you pinterest for the idea!

Our First Sensory Box

Ever since becoming a Pinterest fanatic, I've started reading and seeing these posts and pictures about sensory boxes.  I have to be honest- when I first looked at them I saw... MESS.  And beyond the MESS, I wasn't sure how much my kids would really like it.  I mean, we take them to the beach all the time- that's the hugest sensory box out there, right?!

For the next 8 days, Ryan is working until 7 PM.  (UGH).  That means the kids and I are flying solo for everything except baths and bed time.  The kiddos absolutely love their time with Ryan, and I wasn't sure what we were going to do during those haunting hours (that's what I call them) between nap and dinner time.

I jumped on pinterest, and have now compiled a board filled with activities for "when dadda works late."  On the menu for this week is,
  • a shaving cream table (spray barbasol all over our little tikes table outside and let them go at it)
  • 4 different sensory boxes
  • bath tub fishing
  • and a bunch of our normal run of the mill, arts and crafts stuff
As far as the sensory boxes go, I decided to start verrrrry basic.  I'm creative to a certain extent... but not like the uber pinners on pinterest (where do they come up with this stuff???)

The Dollar Tree was where I started out.  Here's my list of items:
  • rice, rice, and more rice (like 8 bags of it...)
  • beans (red, ham and black)
  • 2 HUGE containers of oats
  • 2 clear storage bins
  • 2 packs of fake bugs
  • 2 packs of fake coins (thank you mardi gras!)
  • 2 packs of beaded necklaces
  • 2 packs of mini farm animals
  • fake flowers
  • fake birds
  • construction paper
Yeah... I spent around 37 at the DOLLAR TREE... where everything is $1.00- I had about 20 bags coming out of that place.

Anyways, I assembled two of my sensory bins last night- our garden bin and our bug bin.  (which in hindsight. really could have- should have been combined into one bin)

Today we did the bug/bean bin.  I cannot tell you how pleasantly surprised I am with the success of this project.  The kids were enthralled with it.  Henry had absolutely no direction- he just spooned the beans from buckets to cups, and ran his trucks through them.  I had a few activities for Maeve to do with hers- the first order of business was finding all the bugs.  This dollar pack of bugs, hidden in a bunch of beans, delighted my child more than I can tell you.  Every time she found a bug, she'd get a huge "OHHH" on her face, just beaming!

Along with bugs, I also stuck in "leaves" (construction paper cut-outs) with numbers on them.  The goal being, to find all 10 leaves (one for each bug).  And because I could think of nothing else to stick in this bean/bug bin, I cut out yellow squares- yeah... what?!  haha :)  Still though, Maeve loved digging for them!

Here are a few pics of our afternoon.

(disclaimer- these pics are straight out of the camera- no cropping/editing/nada... they're not pretty!)

On tomorrow's agenda- the "garden bin" (black beans with fake flowers, worms and gardening tools)

40 days.

Yes, folks... it's been 40 days since I've blogged.  You have no idea how hard I'm kicking myself.

At the same time, perhaps when I look back at this blog (which is why I blog in the first place- to log memories) I will account this time for being the busiest- most insanely, CRAZY time of my life.  Unfortunately (or fortunately?) I have no wild stories or tattoos to show for it... just a big, giant headache and super heavy eyelids.

Where do I even start?

I think my last blog post, I was procrastinating- writing about Maeve's 4th birthday.   Shame on me.  For real.

Because its 2 months later, and sure enough, my memory is starting to fog out on a lot of the details.  Okay- FOR REAL- FOR REAL- I am planning on blogging about Maeve's 4th birthday.  And Henry's 2nd birthday... and a bazillion other things.  But I feel like each of those events deserve their own post.  So be patient with me... they're coming- I just want to take my time remembering and posting pictures.

In this awesome "40 day" post- I'm going to try and compile a list of the happenings/events that have gone on in the past (gulp) month... that way you can get really excited (I'm sure!) about all the awesome things that are coming up on the blog roll... and it will keep me accountable for blogging about said events.

I'll also give a little rundown on each family member... just because.  (Because you all care? :)

First off, the list... the list of events that need to be blogged.   That WILL be blogged. :)
  • Maeve's 4th birthday
  • Halloween
  • Stella's first bout with sickness
  • Henry's 2nd birthday
  • Thanksgiving
  • my grandma
  • the Christmas show
  • my sand dollar luck...
  • wisdom tooth extraction
What an interesting list, eh?

Okay now... the cast of characters:

Ryan
Ryan is pretty much just amazing.  He adapts to anything- anytime, anywhere.  There have been so many changes, and he just picks up like its second nature.  He likes his job- I wouldn't call it love- but he definitely likes it.  He's not only husband of the year (in my book) he's also dad of the year.  With all the insane health emergencies we've been having, he's been the rock that I need.  10 times out of 10 he's there when I need him.  It may mean that he has to go into work earlier or work later, but he does it.  He is still running every morning at the crack of dawn, and apparently its a lot more pleasant to run in 50 degree "chilly" morning weather rather than subzero, wet, snowy weather?  His release is the beach.  (as is mine) But after being in an office all day, he really, really loves getting out on the beach.   Lets see.... his favorite food (or most commonly ordered/eaten food) is a fish taco with avocado... he's still in love with his Detroit teams, and he likes to say, "WE LIVE HERE!" whenever we drive over the The Bridge of Lions. :)

Ashley (mua)
I am 10 pounds away from returning to my pre-preggo weight.  (YAY)... although my eating habits are absurd... (thank God for nursing!)  You can usually find me at the local parks.  There are 2 I really love to go to:  Davenport Park and this awesome wooden park (very comparable to Loomis park in downtown Jackson).  I've recently become a huge fan of Zaxbys (well mainly their iced tea- they have HOSPITAL ICE!) and I had my first Arnold Palmer (1/2 tea, 1/2 lemonade) at Chick-fil-A the other day.  Photography down here has been awesome.  I had to take a leap in October, and ask a family if I could photograph them... but its kind of all taken off from there.  Thank goodness for social media outlets!  There are still (many) times when I feel like an outsider- like when I scheduled a photo shoot for the beach at high tide... (we showed up and the waves were crashing into the storm wall... definitely not able to even step a toe on the beach).  Or when I thought it would be brilliant to do some pictures on the bay front... beautiful- yes, windy as a tornado too.  I've met a lot more people in the past couple of months thanks to photography and the studio.  I am still missing my Michigan friends dearly, but I am so determined to make a life here.  I probably say this 100000 times a day, but its the truth:  "I love this town- I love this area.  If I could transport my house and my friends down here, I'd be in heaven."

Maeve
Oh my Maemae.  She is seriously the best big sister ever.  I'm not sure where she got it from, because I was a very jealous big sister!  I didn't like my parents giving attention to my siblings... she, on the other hand, couldn't care less.  She's always telling me to "look at how cute Stella is" or telling Henry to say certain words, then turning to me and exclaiming "MOM!  Henry said my name!"  This kid is ALL about her sibs.  It's the most wonderful thing to watch.  Along with her great big sis traits, I have to also make a note that she is...
  • stubborn
  • a stinker
  • dramatic
She mimics anything I say or do.  One day, while waiting for my mom to meet me for breakfast, I was trying to phone her, only to reach her mailbox over and over again.   Out of frustration I said, "Ughhh!  Nana's driving mama crazy!"  Want to guess what the first thing out of her mouth, to my mom was?

She's in love- LOVE- with my sisters.  She thinks they're the most beautiful girls on the planet (and they are).  She is still 100% girl... she loves make up- and has gotten many a make up kit taken away from her for putting make up on walls, carpet, etc.  She loves dresses, talking on the phone (to nana or uncle Ty), singing, princesses, etc.  She tells me crazy things all the time like, "Mom, I am a princess and so I do not play baseball, right?"  Right Maeve... right :)  She loves going to the park, chick-fil-a and Barnes and Noble.  She sleeps in my t-shirts every night (to be like me & nana) and she's a total ocean chick.  As soon as we "release" her on the beach, she's running through the surf.  She's so beautiful.  :)

Henry
My sweet mister man had his 2 year appointment.  As a lot of you know, I've been a tad concerned with his lack of language skills.  With much, MUCH relief, we were told that he is A-OK!:) He's definitely on the lower end of words and speaking, but he is sociable and still on track.  At the moment he can say a hand full of phrases like, "Ohhh what's that?" or "Where'd it go?"  and my favorite, "What's wrong?"  He is the sweetest thing.  Sooooo very sensitive.  All I have to do is get down to his eye level and give him "the look."  He's a blubbering mess after that, and all that comforts him is to be held and told that everything's fine.   He loves both of his sissys sooooo much.  And he's surprisingly very gentle with Stella.  There are moments when I'm cringing as he's trying to give her a hug, but for the most part he's really good.  He loves the beach and parks as well.  He's not a huge fan of the waves- if the ocean is particularly rough, he's a little bit hesitant.  But that's fine with me... I'd much rather him be hesitant than throwing himself in the water.  He drinks 24/7.  I have no comment on his bottle habits  (yes, I did say bottle...eek!).  He's obsessive with trains, cars- basically anything with wheels.  He loves fruit snacks and beans (black and kidney beans) and French toast sticks.  Currently, he is by FARRRRR the BEST sleeper in this house.  He takes a solid 2 hour nap each and every day and goes to bed at 8 and sleeps till 7.  AHHHHH-MAZING :)

Stella
My baby... that's not really a newborn baby anymore.  For real- this chick is going to be crawling in no time.  She rolls from one end of the living room to the other in a minute.  She too, loves her brother and sister.  They make her smile all day long.  But I'm fairly sure I'm her favorite.  Let's just say she's a big fan of nursing.  I think I've gotten myself into a badddd situation with her- I've let her nurse throughout the night- and that's ALL she wants to do now.  (heyyy... maybe that's why I've lost weight?)  She sleeps next to me from about 1 AM-6 AM and nurses as she pleases the entire time.  Insane, I know.  But she could very well be my last baby... so I'm trying hard not to rush her through the baby stage.  EVEN if that means zero sleep for us.  We moved her crib into our room the other day because it was decided that I would not trust Maeve to sleep with her.  Maeve would never, ever hurt her purposefully, but I could totally see her sticking a stuffed animal in the crib with her, or climbing in to sleep with her... both of which would be soooo dangerous.  For the 3 hours Stella sleeps on her own, she normally sleeps in her swing... the doc recommended this when she was sick, and we quickly found that she sleeps the most soundly in her swing (versus the bassinet/crib).  She's a porker.  I'm not sure how much she weighs- but at her last appointment which was 3-4 weeks ago, she was 13 pounds.  Really- she's growing WAY TOO FAST.  She's cooing, smiling, and in love with her fingers and toes.  She could very well be the most spoiled baby on the planet.  When I was preggo with her I felt bad that she'd probably be in a swing for most of the day because I'd be too busy with the other kids to hold her.  She made it known that swing life was not for her.  She is either in my arms or in someone else's arms ALL THE TIME.  She'll flip around on the floor for a bit, but she quickly gets upset and wants to be held... again.  It's another one of those things, that I know she'll outgrow fast- so I'm definitely not complaining about holding her.  Although it is VERY difficult trying to dress a 2 year old while holding a baby....

Okay... that should bring you up to date with the McKenney family.

I will blog more in depth about those bulleted "events" as time allows.

But... sighhhh... it did feel good to sit down and write for a bit.  :)

Thanks for reading!

the break.

SO.... it was only a matter of time.

Henry, my daredevil, my 100% rough and tumble boy, my heart attack kid, broke his first bone.  BONES to be exact.

Here's the rundown on what happened.

We ate dinner at my parents house last night.  They have a high chair, but Henry refuses to sit in it.  We use a booster at home, and he eats right up at the table and apparently prefers that.  We were all sitting at the table, (Henry included- in a regular chair) and Henry kind of slid off the side of his chair and fell to the floor.  My sister was on one side of him and I was on the other.  We  all scrambled to pick him up.  What I saw, was Henry hit his head on this toy doll bed that was underneath the table.  We initially paid attention to his head- which yes, had a huge goose egg on it.  He was definitely screaming and crying a bunch, but looking at his head, it was understandable.

We left shortly after the incident, and I was kind of getting the feeling like something was wrong because Henry cried the whole way home.  Normally, he loves watching movies in the van and sitting in his carseat.  When we got home, I went to get him out and noticed his entire left arm was limp.  He wasn't using it to reach out to me, and it was just hanging to the side.

We brought him inside and he was still whimpering/whining... not really crying- more of just a whine like he wasn't feeling good.  We watched him for about 5 minutes and realized something was wrong with his arm.  He wouldn't pick up anything with it, and any time he tried to move it he'd start screaming.  So... Ryan rushed him off to the ER and I stayed with Maeve & Stella until my mom could come over.

By the time I got to the ER, they had "fast tracked" him- which is this awesome idea, of sending the minor injuries (such as broken bones, stitches, etc.) to one end of the ER versus waiting in line behind someone who's having a major medical issue like a heart attack or something.  I was the typical frantic mother, running in asking where my little boy was, as the room they sent me to initially was empty.  The nurse said he was getting x-rays and would be back soon.

As soon as I sat down to catch my breath, I heard the screaming- it was awwwwful.  You could hear Henry screaming through the entire ER wing.  I know I looked like a complete freak, because I ran out to the front desk and said "That's my little guy crying!  Where is he?  I need to get to him!"  But the nurse said only Ryan was allowed in there and they'd be back soon... so I had to sit there in the room and listen to his screaming.  That was one of the hardest things I've ever had to do.  :(  They told me he had been given some pain medicine, but all I could focus on was his screaming.  It was a nightmare.

FINALLY, after what seemed like an hour (but was only about 10 minutes maybe?) they came back in the room.  The doc came in a little bit later and showed us his x-ray.  He had a buckle fracture in both his radius and ulna.  And since he was a pediatric patient (a very little pediatric patient) they didn't want to touch it.  They splinted it, and referred us to an orthopedic specialist in Jacksonville, which is where he'll get his cast.

They gave him some codene, so he slept pretty well last night.  And because he's such a tough little dude, he's been coping with his giant sling thing this morning.

All in all, the injury is not so bad- it didn't get his growth plates at all, and his elbow is fine.  Those were the two main concerns the doc had.

Buddy seems to be doing okay- besides being glued to me (which is both good and bad- good, because I love cuddles, bad because I have a newborn who likes to eat 24/7).

My mom is coming over this morning to help out (praise the Lord).

For now, we're just hanging out... thanking God it was something (relatively) minor.

Thanks for all the thoughts :)

Here are some pics of the child who is going to give me gray hair by the age of 30 ;) :

Henry's Hair

Really people.  Is it that big of a deal???

Despite Henry having some crazy long hair, he's not a girl.  I can assure you that.  PEOPLE OF ST. AUGUSTINE... perhaps you could see that he's not a girl by the clothes that I dress him in.

I think its the post partum hormones, but the girl comments are getting on my nerves...

(kind of) Wordless Wednesday

FACT:  The stomach flu is the worst kind of flu to have.

FACT:  It's 100 times worse when there's a 10 day old baby in the house.

Henry boy has got the pukes.  Thank God for my amazing husband who took over last night, while I fed Stella.  Ryan and Henry were in and out of the bath about 10 times.  And because we wanted to try and seperate Henry from the baby, Ryan slept on the couch with the buddy (versus Henry sleeping in bed with us).

About an hour ago, my mom picked up Maeve for the day.  The poor girl doesn't need to hang around the sick house...

As of now, its me, the big guy and Stells.

It's pretty quiet and calm... minus the occasional puking episode.

sweet summer light ;)

Today kind of stunk.  I can't lie... it was definitely less than fabulous.

Maeve was up at 5 AM (no joke).  And before it was even 8 AM, I had already threatened to send her back to bed about 200 times.  We tried to go swimming- FAIL- really I should have known better with the way Maeve was acting.  My reasoning was that I'd tire the kids out, and then they would take fabulous naps.

Unfortunately there were no fabulous naps for anyone today.  Maeve kicked at her door for about 30 minutes, which kept Henry awake.  I threw the towel in, planted myself on the couch and let the kids run crazy for the rest of the afternoon.

When Ryan got home, I needed out of the house ASAP.

I decided to go to this little used bookstore downtown.  I didn't take into account the traffic of St. Augustine around 5:00 is AWFUL... nor did I factor in parking.  After about 30 minutes of driving around I found a spot and took a nice walk to the bookstore.  Unfortunately they didn't have any of the books on my "want to read" list, but it was still nice to have some silence.

After dinner, we decided to sit on our back "porch"/deck thing, and give the kids popsicles.  It was the first time we had ever actually used the back deck since being down here.

The kids were blissfully happy and playing together.  It's moments like these when I think "okay- I can do this!  I can raise 3 kids!  This is awesome!"

Literally, the second I said a word about coming inside for the night, all hell broke loose.  Henry threw himself in the dirt (or ant piles?), Maeve planted herself on floor, refusing to take a bath.  And its moments like these where I think, "Stick a fork in me.  I'm done.  There is no way I am going to be able to juggle 3 of these!"

I did manage to take some pretty pictures of my kids being sweet in the the sweet summery light... but don't let appearances fool you.  They morphed into something out of "The Twilight Zone" shortly after.

Snap It UP Saturday!

I think I'm going to start making "Snap it UP Saturday" a weekly thing... I'm going to try it for a few weeks and see if I can get a linky party going with some of my friends :)

It's a pretty straight forward theme... basically, grab your camera, snap some shots of your Saturday and post!  Would anyone want to play along next week (or maybe the week after?) :)

Here are my snap ups  .. :)
